Saba's Own Sistine Chapel In the Making

The Bottom, Saba - Local artist, Heleen Cornet, is hard at work transforming the Roman Catholic Church located in The Bottom into Saba's own version of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. When approached by church officials regarding painting the altar, Heleen volunteered her services free of charge. Now some four months into the project that has taken on a life of its own, Heleen anticipates completing the project during the summer months. She is being assisted by another local artist, Judy Meeks, who has undertaken the stone and fern work that makes the transition from the church structural supports to Heleen's heavenly vision of angels and cherubs set amidst Saba's picturesque rainforest and cottages. This is a definite "must see" on your next visit to Saba. 

Heleen is one of Saba's most renowned artists. You'll find her work incorporated in a number of books available on Saba including The Nature of Saba, Saban Trails... A Walking and Hiking Guide, Guide to the Saba Marine Park, Saba's Cottages and a new book that focuses on the nearby island of St. Eustatius. Her paintings and murals grace Saba's hotels and many private homes. Working in watercolors, charcoals, oils and pastels, Heleen is inspired by the rainforests, seascapes and marine life that Saba has to offer.

Saba is home to a number of fine artists who are inspired by Saba's natural beauty and surroundings.
