Lee and Lea Fulmer first visited Saba while on "The Polynesia", a Windjammer Cruise that now only rarely frequents our port. Although it was love at first, it took a few years for Lee and Lea to find the Saba property that was just right for them...but once they found it, they poured their hearts, souls, and a good bit of sweat in to making Cat's Eye, a fantastic little cottage in the heart of Windwardside village. Lee and Lea's now winter in Taos, NM (where they are Ski Patrol and EMT volunteers), and summer in Saba. The origin of the cottage name? Mrs. Lea is a cat lover, of course, but the name goes back to her marble playing with her brother as a child.
While the Fulmers were renovating, many a local came by to offer advice and tell about their memories of this once happenin' house. From the stories told, the house traces back to the family of Peter Every, original construction in the 1880's. His father built the home (original size 12' x 24'--feet, not meters!) to raise his 6 children--we find it's more comfortable for a couple. In the 1920's, an indoor kitchen was added and the wood floors were treated with local 'bush' to give it a dance floor finish. The locals preferred this house for their pig roasts and 'jump ups' because the lady from Hell's Gate could 'play the wall'. Apparently the mix of her special touch and the 1" thick wooden walls emitted a dancing beat. Three out of 4 of the original walls remain. The charm of this original Saban cottage is evident yet the inside boasts a fully modern kitchen with all new appliances, full size stove, refrigerator, large shower and bathroom, queen size bed, comfortable living/reading area, outdoor deck furniture, and many extras. Mid-week maid service provides fresh linens, towels and a 'quicky' cleanup. Click thru to view our new web page with specifics for a variety of Saba cottages and private homes. Dive packages at Cat's Eye, based on two persons, are moderately priced at only $755 per person. Contact Lynn for availability.
