Oliver and Angelika Hartleib, owners
of El Momo Cottages, spent as much time designing the new addition to their eco-style
property as they did building it. Many hours were spent
relaxing on the hillside perch devising ways to best take advantage of
this unique getaway location. Naming the cottage was easy...whether you are lying in the king-size bed or
enjoying an herbal tea from the semi-outdoor kitchen and dining area, the
views from this love nest are nothing less than remarkable; sky and ocean
are seen from every angle.
Speaking of labor, Ollie built the entire cottage from each stone in the cistern to the final railings on the deck with little modern equipment. Assistance was lent by Niels Lovstad, who is from a long-line of shipbuilders in Denmark. Combining his carpentry skills with his enchantment of traditional Saban cottages, Cottage in the Sky emerged. Proudly displaying the old-style cottage complete with mortise and tenon joints this environmentally correct cottage also boasts new world thinking with solar power, composting toilet, etc. Neils and wife Laila first visited Saba in early 2000 with the intention of having sons Moses and Jonas learn to dive with their father. The trip was such a success that 6 months later Niels and Laila returned so that Sea Saba could introduce diving to Laila as well. Married in Denmark nearly 8 years ago, Ollie and Angelika returned in the summer of 2001. With 18-month Laura in tow, they ventured back for a summer holiday where they purchased the lumber for Cottage in the Sky and also conceived baby #2 (Luca, a bouncing boy born in June 2002). In October 2001, the Lovstad's returned to Saba to help with the cottage construction. In 2003, Moses and his new bride returned to Saba to honeymoon in Cottage in the Sky--full circle romance or what?! El Momo Cottages is a collection of European-style sleeping cottages, each unique in its decor and ambience but all quite private with fantastic views, and sunsets (in most months). Since El Momo opened in 1996, it has been popular with the budget-minded traveler. The reputation of the Hartleib hospitality has made El Momo Cottages a success with a variety of Sea Saba's divers. Cottage in the Sky 5-night packages including 3 days diving and transfers start at only $544 per person. Contact Lynn for availability and booking information.
